Political Row Erupts Over Women’s Reservation Bill in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, April 17:
A sharp political confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha after Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused opposition parties of obstructing the passage of a key Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at granting 33% reservation to women in legislatures.
In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Shah claimed that parties including the Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and Samajwadi Party did not allow the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill linked to the proposed Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
According to Shah, the bill sought to ensure 33% reservation for women in both Parliament and state assemblies. He criticized the opposition for allegedly celebrating the bill’s rejection, calling it “reprehensible” and against the interests of women and the nation.

Shah further stated that the failure to pass the bill would deny women what he described as their rightful representation in legislative bodies. He also accused opposition parties of repeatedly taking positions that, in his view, undermine women’s empowerment.

In a politically charged remark, Shah warned that the opposition could face electoral consequences, suggesting that women voters would respond strongly in future elections, including the 2029 general elections.

The remarks have intensified the ongoing debate around women’s reservation in India, with opposition leaders yet to issue a detailed response on the specific allegations. The development is expected to further escalate political tensions as parties prepare for upcoming electoral battles.

The proposed legislation has long been a subject of national debate, seen by supporters as a significant step toward gender equality in politics, while critics have often raised concerns over its implementation and political timing.
