Moon Sighting Unlikely Across India and J&K Amid Cloudy Conditions; Eid Announcement Expected After Maghrib

Srinagar, Mar 19: The chances of sighting the Shawwal crescent moon on Thursday remain extremely low across India due to unfavorable weather and visibility conditions, according to astronomical estimates and weather observers.

Experts indicate that India has only about a 5 percent probability of moon sighting today. The possibility is further reduced due to widespread cloud cover, limited crescent illumination, and poor visibility timing after sunset. Authorities are expected to make an official announcement regarding Eid-ul-Fitr within an hour after Maghrib prayers, depending on confirmed sightings.

In Pakistan, the probability of moon sighting stands slightly higher at around 20 percent, though it remains uncertain. Reports suggest that the crescent is highly unlikely to be visible in Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan, while only a very weak chance exists in parts of Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Astronomical data suggests the moon will remain above the horizon for nearly 30 minutes after sunset in Pakistan. Experts say that under perfectly clear skies, the crescent might be detectable using optical aids such as binoculars or telescopes, but naked-eye visibility is expected to remain extremely difficult.

Meanwhile, across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, persistent cloud cover and ongoing weather activity have made the possibility of moon sighting highly unlikely in most areas.
Authorities and moon sighting committees in the region are expected to review reports after Maghrib prayers before issuing the final announcement regarding Eid-ul-Fitr.

Residents have been advised to wait for official confirmation from religious and administrative authorities regarding the start of Shawwal and the celebration of Eid.
